Following India's defeat to England in the recent Test match, Sunil Gavaskar is urging the team management to consider strategic changes in the playing XI. His primary recommendation centers around the inclusion of Kuldeep Yadav, a move he believes could significantly impact the team's performance in the upcoming second Test in Birmingham.
Kuldeep Yadav is expected to bring a new dimension to the bowling attack.
Gavaskar suggests that Kuldeep Yadav should replace Shardul Thakur in the lineup, highlighting the favorable conditions for wrist spin expected at the Birmingham pitch. "Whether Jasprit Bumrah is fit or not, I think Kuldeep Yadav has to come into the team... the Birmingham pitch will be one where there will be just a little bit of help for the wrist spinner," Gavaskar stated.
Thakur's performance in the previous Test, where he bowled six overs for 38 runs without taking a wicket and scored only five runs across both innings, has raised concerns about his effectiveness in the current setup. While Thakur did manage to dismiss Ben Stokes and Harry Brook in quick succession during the second innings, Gavaskar remains unconvinced of his overall impact.
Despite Kuldeep Yadav's limited Test experience in England, with only one match at Lord's in 2018 where he didn't secure any wickets, Gavaskar believes his unique bowling style could prove crucial in Birmingham.
Gavaskar also addressed the performance of the middle order, specifically debutant Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair, both of whom were dismissed for ducks in the first innings. This collapse led to a significant setback after a promising start.
While Gavaskar is hesitant to immediately remove them from the team, he indicated that changes might be necessary if India falls further behind in the series. "If things don't go well in the second Test, maybe Sai (Sudharsan) and Karun (Nair). I don't want to drop them at the moment. Then I'd also look at Washington Sundar, so that it really gives you a more solid batting, and also get a little more variety as far the bowling is concerned," he elaborated.
Following their defeat, India is aiming to level the series against England at Edgbaston.
