Rajasthan is the state of colours, bravery and royalty. The destination is worldwide known for its magnificent iconic forts which are not merely stone structures but living legacies. Every fort here tells a story. A walk through Rajasthan feels incomplete without exploring its stunning forts, and here are seven that capture its stunning frames.
Set atop a hill overlooking Maota Lake, Amber Fort is a stunning combination of Rajput and Mughal architecture. The fort was built in the 16th century and is known for its ornate palaces, mirrored halls, and pretty courtyards. Do not miss out on the gorgeous Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) which feels like stepping into a world of light.
Mehrangarh is one of the largest forts in India. It dominates the skyline of Jodhpur, the Blue City of Rajasthan. The grand fort exudes both power and beauty and the carved windows, expansive courtyards, and the panoramic view of the indigo-painted houses below make it a fort that is as photogenic as it is awe-inspiring.
Known as the “Sonar Qila” or Golden Fort, Jaisalmer Fort glows like molten gold under the desert sun. Built in 1156, it remains one of the few “living forts” in the world, with shops, homes, and temples inside its walls. Walking through its narrow lanes feels like traveling back centuries.
Spread across nearly 700 acres, Chittorgarh Fort is a symbol of Rajput pride and sacrifice. Famous for stories of valiant rulers and legendary queens like Rani Padmini, the fort houses towers of victory, palaces, and temples. Its sheer scale makes it a monument not just of stone, but of courage.
Surrounded by a wall that stretches over 36 km—second only to the Great Wall of China—Kumbhalgarh Fort is a marvel. Built in the 15th century by Rana Kumbha, it also has the honour of being the birthplace of Maharana Pratap. Its rugged beauty and massive ramparts make it memorable.
Junagarh Fort stands proudly on the plains unlike other hill forts in Rajasthan. Built in the late 16th century, it is known for its exquisite marble and red sandstone palaces. Its interiors, decorated with gold leaf, mirror work, and frescoes, showcase the artistic finesse of the Bikaner royals.
Taragarh Fort in Bundi is a true blue hidden gem in Rajasthan that was built in 1354. The fort is noted for its tunnels and vantage points that offer panoramic views of the town. With battlements, reservoirs, and different kind of charm, it embodies the raw, untouched side of Rajasthan’s fort heritage.
