Australia and England currently hold the top two positions in the WTC table, each with a perfect points percentage of 100 after securing victories in their opening matches. Sri Lanka currently sits at third position after concluding their two-match series against Bangladesh, they secured one win and one draw. With one draw and one loss, Bangladesh is currently ranked fourth.

Meanwhile, reigning champions South Africa, New Zealand, and Pakistan are yet to begin their WTC campaigns in this cycle.

India's opening match did not unfold as they hoped for, despite showing resilience at Headingley. Although the team had five centurions in the match, they faced defeat as England completed a remarkable chase, leading to a 1-0 advantage in the five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

Chasing a target of 371, England capitalized on a strong opening partnership between Ben Duckett (149) and Zak Crawley. Joe Root and debutant Jamie Smith then guided the chase to victory with an unbroken partnership. Shubman Gill's team was left to regret a middle-order collapse and dropped catches that ultimately affected the result.

Following the match, Gill acknowledged that India had opportunities but failed to seize them. He mentioned that India was aiming for a larger lead, but a lack of runs from the lower order impacted their plans.

India will now concentrate on the second Test at Edgbaston, aiming for a swift recovery to maintain their WTC campaign. Currently, they are positioned near the bottom of the table, along with the West Indies.

The WTC cycle commenced with Sri Lanka's tour of Bangladesh on June 17 and will continue until the final in 2027.
